Kathryn Dutchak was born in 1988 as a twin to another brother in a family of six. Her father worked for the Ministry of Sustainable Resource Development before dying of cancer in 2012, and her mother was a school teacher before quitting the workforce in the early 2000’s due to the chronic wasting disease, MS. As fourth generation Ukrainian settlers, mixed with second generation Polish WWII refugees, Kathryn’s work strives to uncover the truth while still working within the realms of art and photography.

This type of upbringing, mixed with her own personal struggles with mental health and life obstacles has nurtured the need to search for justice and portray reality as an everchanging truth to all those that perceive it. By mixing fact finding with creativity, the end result is work that strives to reduce the world around us into capturable moments and substances which rely on our own interpretation to reveal.

As an aspiring author and investigator, Kathryn’s education as a visual artist from the University of Alberta, 2012 has set the ground work for discovery that spans from digital literacy in education, graphic art and illustration, non-profit development and volunteering in some of the county’s tough spaces. As the hardest places have the most to contribute, the philosophy behind Kathryn’s work is that the same practical, everyday hardnose grit that applies to the world of research and truth seeking applies to visual art and design.
